Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

ANPR is a requirement for people and organisations looking to reliably track or identify vehicles. This may be as they enter or leave premises or may even be on the open road. ANPR technology is now very sophisticated and it is capable of being fully integrated into a networked video surveillance system. There are many attributes to achieving a successful system and these are discussed below.

InCam are in a position to offer such systems - fully designed and installed to meet your requirements whether these be for a single or multi-camera ANPR solution.

The Technology

ANPR relies upon a number of elements to make a successful system:

ANPR elements for success

• good quality, reliable cameras capable of longer range and rejecting interfering light sources

• accurate positioning and lighting considerations

• data capture through a high performance workstation or server

• excellent analysis software

The Products & Capabilities

InCam use products from Derwent and Videofit to create successful ANPR solutions. Indeed these two manufacturers lead their respective fields of camera and infra-red products, and ANPR software analysis and solutions. These systems are capable of much more than number plate recognition however - using dual cameras, synchronised images of number plate, overview of scene and vehicle occupants are all achievable. The systems are also capable of capturing data from vehicles travelling at up to 120mph.

Derwent's REG™ product set is the complete solution for consistent, reliable number plate capture on a 24/7 basis. REG™ combines the latest in camera, optics, illumination and filter technology to provide clear images of vehicle number plates in both day and night conditions, at distances of up to 35m.

The cameras and lighting units are available in different forms to suit all manner of traffic analysis - from the open road to toll booths and car parks.

Videofit's software recognition engine was developed entirely in house and offers the highest known accuracy figures when tested with the RealWorld ANPR disks. These disks are the only known standard for testing ANPR systems and consist of a continuous 60 minute film of traffic at designated speeds. The footage is not edited in any way.

Anyone can obtain the RealWorld disks in order to test and compare different ANPR systems. Because the films are unedited they provide an excellent indication of the results you will actually achieve when Videofit is coupled with a good camera installation.

The ANPR-M recognition engine achieves these very high accuracy figures due to a unique technology called Pattern Analysis, in which every character is analysed programmatically for shape and tone. The main advantage of this technique is that there is no limit to final accuracy - additional analysis can be added for any particular character without affecting any others.

Unlike other ANPR engines, Videofit requires no learning period and provides full recognition accuracy from day one. Plates which have traditionally been difficult to capture are easily recognised, including those mounted high, square plates, inverse plates from classic & military vehicles and plates with no rectangular border.
